Planning to go to the Gym? The following measures should help

With the gyms re-opening, many of us may have already started going to the gym for active workouts or planning to do so very soon.

The following measures can help:

For Gym goers:

  • Maintain physical distancing, minimum 6 feet, preferably 12 feet
* Always wear a mask when in the gym
* Keep soap and water for handwashing or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer at stations. Follow 20 seconds cleaning protocol.
  • Wipe all equipments, counters or hard surfaces between use.
  • Bring your own towels, water bottles and other personal stuff. These should not be shared.
*Consider limiting workout length to avoid unnecessary exposure, decrease congestion, and allow for additional sanitization
*It is recommended that people who are more vulnerable or at higher risk of contracting COVID-19 including those who are over the age of 65 or those who have chronic medical conditions—take extra precaution or refrain from use of the gym.

For Gym owners:

  •  Gyms must ensure reduced occupancy to ensure physical distancing measures at all times.
  • Implement comprehensive sanitation protocols, including sanitizing gym equipment before and after every use.
  • Disposable disinfectant wipes, cleaner, or spray to be made available so that users can frequently wipe touched surfaces on gym equipments.
  • Arrange waiting areas, service areas, and break rooms to provide for appropriate physical distancing and sanitize areas regularly between use
  • Gyms can consider educating customers and employees through signages and posters.
  • Arrange cardio equipment adhering to appropriate physical distancing
  • Ensure adequate equipments are available for users to minimize sharing to the extent possible, or limiting use of equipment by one user at a time and cleaning and disinfecting between use.
  • Consider limiting gym hours to allow for proper sanitation
  • Implement enhanced sanitation of locker room areas.
  • Keep doors and windows open where possible to improve ventilation
  • Post signs encouraging social distancing (visible to customers)
  • Ensure that customers wash or sanitize their hands upon entering and leaving the facility
  • Ask customers to clean equipment they come in contact with using disinfecting wipes before and after each use
  • Encourage customers to use only one equipment at a time so that machines are cleaned after use
